The MLB
playoffs are a magical time of the year and it's time to step into the
postseason batter's box beginning on Wednesday with a spectacular NL contest
between wild card winning Colorado Rockies and division champions Philadelphia
Phillies in the city of brotherly love as one-of-three games on this fantastic
day of baseball.
The Rockies
won for the 14th time in 15 games and got here by winning a wild playoff game on
Monday in 13 innings over the San Diego Padres. It seemed the Rockies fortune
had ran out with the Padres getting a two run homerun in the top of the 13th,
but the Rockies rallied to a home 9-8 victory to earn the right to meet the
Phillies.
The Rockies
are in the playoffs for the first time since 1995, as they send left-hander Jeff
Francis to the mound. Francis is 17-9 on the year with a 4.22 ERA.
He's made
just two career appearance against Philadelphia for a 0-1 record and an
astronomical ERA of 15.12.
The
Phillies will counter with ace left-hander Cole Hamels, who is 15-5 on the year
with a 3.39 ERA. This will be Hamels' first career start against Colorado.
This will
be a great game between two strong lefties starting at 3:00pm EST.
Games 1 and
2 at Philadelphia, Wednesday and Thursday. Game 3 and Game 4 (if necessary) at
Colorado, Saturday Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7. Game 5 (if necessary) at
Philadelphia, Tuesday October 9.
The second
game on Wednesday, beginning at 6:30pm EST, features a matchup in the AL between
division winning Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox in bean town.
Right-hander John Lackey will climb the hill for the Angels. Lackey
brings a strong 19-9 record to the bump with a league leading ERA of 3.01.
Lackey has
struggled against Boston going 1-6 lifetime in eleven career starts over 60 1/3
innings with an ERA of 6.27, which is the second highest versus any other team
he's faced over his career.
Josh
Beckett, who emerged as the ace of one of the deepest pitching staffs in
baseball, will take the mound for the Red Sox. Beckett jumped out to a 9-0 start
this year and was 12-2 at the All-Star break.
The
right-hander was this season's only twenty game winner at 20-7 with an ERA of
3.27. Beckett is 1-0 in just two career outings against the Angels with a
sparkling 1.00 ERA. Games 1 and 2 at Boston, Wednesday and Friday. Game 3 and
Game 4 (if necessary) at Anaheim, Sunday Oct. 7 and Monday, Oct. 8. Game 5 (if
necessary) at Boston, Wednesday October 10.
The night
cap starting at 10:00pm EST is made up of division champions Chicago Cubs and
Arizona Diamondbacks to be played at Chase Field, where Arizona went 50-31 this
year. On the road, the Cubs were barely over .500 at 41-40.
Carlos
Zambrano (18-13, 3.95 ERA) will take the mound for Chicago and Arizona will
counter with Brandon Webb (18-10, 3.01 ERA). This will be a great righty versus
righty duel in the desert.

2 at Arizona, Wednesday and Thursday Games 3 and 4 (if necessary) at Chicago,
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7 Game 5 (if necessary) at Arizona, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
